Bike Ride – Pedal out Polio.
Jeffrey Coup and Eric McDowell, Rotarians from the Milton club, will ride their bicycles for 335 miles through eight counties, including Clinton, this month on their “Rotary Pedals Out Polio” campaign June 25-28.
They plan to visit each of the central Pennsylvania towns that host the 34 clubs in District 7370 and they raise funds for the Rotary Foundation’s campaign to wipe polio off the face of the earth once and for all.
There will be a stop in Pottsville at the Union Station Intermodal Center on June 28, at approximately 2:00 PM.
Anyone wishing to donate can go the Club Website. Members are asked to attend on June 28 to support the Ride.
The Club has Pottsville Rotary Shirts for sale, $15 each. See Andy Pope if interested.
On Saturday, for Rotary “Pedals Out Polio,” our past district governor, Jeff Coup, will commence a bike ride, beginning at Renovo and ending in Tamaqua with 335 miles, for the purpose of eradicating polio worldwide. Tuesday, they will start out in Ashland and continue to Hegins, Tower City, Minersville, Schuylkill Haven, Pottsville, Port Carbon, Frackville, Shenandoah, Ringtown and Mahanoy City, ending in Tamaqua with 90.2 miles for the day. Their arrival in Pottsville will be at Union Station at approximately 2 p.m.
Bikers are invited to ride a leg, a day, all four days or be a virtual rider (donate not to ride), keeping in mind that you will need to arrange for your own return transportation or plan on riding back to your starting point. To ride with the tour, a separate registration form and donation is requested for each day. You may join the tour at any departure point listed and leave whenever you wish. A minimum gift of $25 is requested to ride any part of a day. All tax-deductible gifts should be payable to “The Rotary Foundation” with Polio Plus on the memo line.
Rotary has been tirelessly working to eradicate polio for more than 20 years and has immunized more than 2 billion children in more than 125 countries worldwide. Success is within reach, as there are only four countries remaining with outbreaks of polio, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria. Rotary, the World Health Organization and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have extended time, energy and resources to this end.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged an additional $355 million to Rotary for this final phase to make these remaining four countries polio-free. To receive this pledge, the foundation requires Rotary to raise an additional $200 million to the monies already raised over these 20 years. We are close, as Rotary has raised $174.7 million to date. This effort of “Pedals Out Polio” is for this goal.
In addition to the adult bike riders, we are inviting children to ride on a course that will be outlined at the parking lot of Union Station between 1 and 2 p.m. Donations will be accepted at registration that day. Help us to assure that in the near future no child will need a polio vaccine or ever be crippled because a vaccine was unavailable.
Registration forms in advance can be obtained by calling 628-2969. Additional information can also be obtained by logging onto www.rotary7370.org.
