We had a number of visiting members from the Pottsville Kiwanis and Lions Club in attendance. This provided a good opportunity for fellowship with other service clubs.

Salvation Army Bell-ringing - The Club manned a kettle for the Salvation Army on Saturday, December 10 outside of Boscov’s.
PROGRAM – Eric Lieberman, Hops, Vide Dine and Auction Wrap-up.

Eric talked about the success of Hops, Vide & Dine, our signature fundraiser. He thanked the committee – Mary Sitcoske, Pete Kietsock, Frank Peron, Karen Farenchick, Andy Pope, Nick Wachter, and Mike Joyce, as well as all the Rotarian who donated auction item and participated. It was great to see some members who have trouble attending Wednesday meetings.

Eric and his committee made some changes this year that really helped drive attendance as well as either saved money on expenses or generated more money on bidding for the Fantasy and Silent auctions. Several Rotarians made sizeable donations that really helped our cause. Our estimate was close to 200 people attended. The date has been set for next year – Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012. Please mark your calendars.

Web Sites: CLUB: www.pottsvillerotary.com DISTRICT: www.rotary7370.org

PROGRAM – Rotary Foundation – Mary Sitcoske and Bill Parulis

Mary and Bill presented this week’s program to celebrate Rotary Foundation month and to remind us of the necessity to give and also the benefits others receive from our donations. As we know, Rotary’s goal is Every Rotarian, Every Year, meaning we strive for participation from each member annually. The most visible project Rotary has undertaken is the End Polio Now campaign. So far in 2011, over 400 million children worldwide have been vaccinated for polio. We have collected over $192 million of our $200 million challenge from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and are well on our way to receiving their matching grant.

Foundation does many other things besides fighting Polio. The program funds Vocational Training, like the Group Study Exchange. Since 1947 there has been over 40,000 student ambassadors worldwide participating in GSE. Foundation runs District Simplified grants and Matching and Global Grants. Our club recently applied for a Simplified Grant through the Service Committee chaired by Vice President Clint Del Valle to help refurbish Rotary fields. Internationally Rotary has granted over 2,700 Simplified Grants since 2003 and over 24,000 matching grants since 1965.

Rotary’s Every Rotarian Every Year goal is a $100 donation from each club member each year. The district asks each incoming President to set a Foundation donation goal for their club for the year. After not meeting our $100 per member goal for several years, the past few Presidents have submitted a goal based on an average of $50 per member for the year. The Pottsville Rotary club achieved that goal last year and thanks to a significant donation from a single member this year at the Bike ride to end Polio, we are already over the $50/member goal this year. However, the year is still young and now we are shooting for that $100/member average.

Some Rotarians give on their birthdays, as an annual reminder, while others like to give in November during Foundation month. Now is a great time to donate for 2011 tax purposes. Other Rotarians elect to be billed $25 quarterly, and that option is available by telling Treasurer Jim Cooksey.

In the words of President Andy at the end of today’s presentation, please “give ’til it hurts.”

Thanks Mary and Bill for a great presentation.
Birthdays - Ralph Jaeger – Nov. 13, Mary Sitcoske – Nov. 14

Foundation Donation - Thank you Mary for your birthday donation during Foundation month.

50/50 Winner - Clayton Ost had the winning ticket but not the winning card.

Projects Wanted - Frank Peron reported that Penn State Schuylkill is looking for some community service projects to be done on January 16 as part of Martin Luther King Day. PSU volunteers will have about 1 – 1.5 hours that day to serve. See Frank with ideas.

ROTARY BUSINESS

Holiday Party - The Pottsville Rotary Holiday party will be held Friday Evening, December 9 at the Pottsville Club. More information to follow. Our schedule for December is regular meetings on the 7th, 14th, and 21st. No meeting on the 28th because of the Holiday party.

Salvation Army Bell-ringing - The Club will again man a kettle for the Salvation Army this Christmas. The date is confirmed as December 10 outside of Boscov’s. The sign-up sheet has started at the Attendance table.

Thanksgiving Food Drive - the club will again be collecting food or monetary donations for the Knights of Columbus Food Drive. Checks can be made payable to Pottsville Rotary Charities and the donations will be split between the Knights of Columbus and the Salvation Army.

ROTARY CLUB OF POTTSVILLE – BULLETIN -November 2, 2011

Web Sites: CLUB: www.pottsvillerotary.com DISTRICT: www.rotary7370.org
PROGRAM – Liz Hinkle, District Manager, Schuylkill Conservation District
Liz took over the position as district manager in 2010 from the retiring Craig Morgan. She described the Schuylkill Conservation District as the hub of a wheel coordinating different federal and state agencies to implement plans and programs on a local basis. Among the programs they help deliver to the area are:

Environmental Education – a program that teaches children about the environment. Included here are many events and historic walks, including some conducted by Porcupine Pat, a Rotary guest several months ago.

Bear Creek Festival – a free environmental education event for kids.

Parks and Recreation – Liz pointed out the fabulous job done at Sweet Arrow Lake and all the events being held there.

Erosion Sediment Control Programs – being done at any active construction site.

Chesapeke Bay Program – tied in with the Watershed Implementation Plan – there are many new regulations and requirements now needed. The Conservation District has plans to go farm to farm in an educational outreach program to help area farmers.

AgLand Preservation Program – where farmers can sell development rites to a property forever so it will always be preserved.

Liz also mentioned the District partnering with the Chamber to promote Agribusiness in the county. Thanks Liz for a very informative program.

Birthdays – Pete Pope Oct 31, Laura McHugh Nov 4, Eric Lieberman, Nov 5
Foundation Donation – Thank you Eric Lieberman for your donation to Foundation.
50/50 Winner – Jim Cooksey had the winning ticket but not the winning card. Looking for the 7 of Hearts.

Guest – Minersville Rotarian George Halcovage was the guest of Eric Lieberman.
George and Eric talked about the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Pottsville Rotary participated last year for the first time and will be collecting canned goods and cash again this year. Last year the food drive delivered 927 meals to the needy and shut-in throughout the area. Over 200 volunteers helped out and the invitation was extended for any Rotarian to get involved this year. There will always be a need for more help.
ROTARY BUSINESS

ROTARY CLUB OF POTTSVILLE – BULLETIN -October 26, 2011

Web Sites: CLUB: www.pottsvillerotary.com DISTRICT: www.rotary7370.org
PROGRAM – Mary Sitcoske, co-chair SCORE

SCORE is a national program started in Schuylkill County over 20 months ago by a group of Past Presidents of the Schuylkill Chamber. Their goal is growing successful business across America, one business at a time. Originally thought of as a way for retired executives to give back to the community, SCORE is now manned by retirees and active business people. The Schuylkill chapter is an extension of the Berks chapter, and currently has 21 volunteers available to help businesses grow in our County.

Nationwide, small business is the backbone of our economy. Small business makes up 99% of the employers in the country; provides 75% of the jobs in the country, 50% of private-sector employees and 45% of total US private sector payroll. Mary showed slides for Schuylkill County showing 74% of the companies in the county had less than 10 employees; 13% 10 to 20; 7% 20 – 50; 3% 50 – 100; 2% 100 – 250; and 1% over 250 employees.

SCORE is resource for individuals looking to start a new business, or for existing businesses that need some help or would like to grow. Their main service is a transfer of knowledge. They can do this through Counseling, either face-to-face, by telephone or through the web; by Mentoring, Coaching or Consulting at a client’s location; and by Education, through seminars, workshops and roundtables. The service is totally confidential and it is free.

Rotarians wishing to get involved are encouraged to talk to Mary about how you can help. Thank you Mary for an informative program.

PROGRAM – Hillside SPCA

Sylvia Nabholz and Hillside SPCA President Joe Chiaretti gave a presentation on the Hillside SPCA. Both Sylvia and Joe have over 20 years affiliation with the Hillside SPCA. Hillside is not associated with the ASPCA, a National Organization. Joe provided an outline of the Facility. Specific areas include:

Small Dog Area (20 pounds and under) this area is currently housing 45 dogs.

Large Dog Building, now housing 65 dogs. One half of the dogs are Pit Bulls, which due to a bad reputation are difficult to place in adoptions, but many of them would be very good pets..

Cat Room which currently houses 300 cats.

They are in a crisis situation with the number of dogs and cats. They have received 215 dogs in the past two months and adopted out about 100 in that same time. The Hillside SPCA has the largest Percentage of Adoptions in the state.

The facility has 3 full time managers, 13 full time employees and 13 part time employees, plus many volunteers.

One of the most important items for people to consider is to have dogs and cats spayed or neutered to keep populations under control. All dogs and cats adopted from the SPCA are spayed or neutered before leaving.

The Hillside SPCA operates with an Annual Budget of $750,000, with most money coming from Private Donations and Fund Raisers. Very little government funds are received.

Sylvia and Joe thanked Rotary and Rotarians for their support throughout the years.

Rotarians around the globe are planning events to raise polio eradication awareness and funding for World Polio Day on 24 October.

Australian club members are working with the Global Poverty Project on a petition drive aimed at persuading world leaders to fully fund the critical work of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Supporters can sign the petition online.

The Global Poverty Project has scheduled an End of Polio Concert on 28 October to coincide with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth, Australia. Rotarians have joined with the group to lobby leaders to put polio eradication on the meeting agenda. Hugh Evans, cofounder and CEO of the Global Poverty Project, is a scheduledspeaker at the 2012 RI Convention in Bangkok, Thailand, in May.

“Global collaboration has ensured that eradication is within reach,” says Michael Sheldrick, the group’s polio campaign manager and a member of the Rotary Club of Crawley, Western Australia. “Our generation has a chance to realize a historic opportunity and ensure that no one else ever has to fear this disease. That’s why it’s vital we commit to finish the job.”

Among other events planned around World Polio Day are these:

Rotarians in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, are organizing a Walk to End Polio Now, aimed at drawing 4,000 participants and raising money for Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge to match $355 million in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in support of polio eradication.

The Rotary Club of Venezia-Riviera del Brenta, Italy, has organized a Run to End Polio fundraiser as part of the 23 October Venice Marathon.

Rotary, Rotaract, and Interact clubs in Canada and the United States are coordinating a Wake Up Across the Continent polio awareness initiative during the week of 24-28 October. Each club is encouraged to participate and to publicize its activities, share ideas, and post images onFacebook.

Rotarians in Finland will conduct a “This Close” campaign with ads in print, on television, and online 24-28 October, and they plan a fundraiser on World Polio Day.

Rotarians in Canada have arranged for the “This Close” TV public service announcement and other polio-related programming to air on CBC nationally throughout October.

Rotarians in Africa have started a “This Close” page on Facebook for World Polio Day, encouraging fellow Rotarians to replace their Facebook profile photo that day with their “This Close” photo from www.thisclose.net.

The Rotary Club of Linlithgow Grange, Lothian, Scotland, is sponsoring a Scotch Hop dance fundraiser on 29 October to benefit Rotary’s challenge.

Rotary clubs in Boston will present A Festival of Voices: Singing Out to End Polio Now on 23 October, with all proceeds to benefit the challenge.

The Nepal PolioPlus Committee will host a one-day seminar on polio in conjunction with the local UNICEF office.

Inspired by these plans? Here are a few ways you and your club can help observe World Polio Day:

PROGRAM – Students of the Month

At this week’s meeting we heard from three students, two from Pottsville and one from Nativity. The Pottsville students of the month were Taylor Englert and Joshua Kovich, and Brianna Kuperavage represented Nativity.

Taylor Englert is Vice President of her class, a member of the National Honor Society, and a four year member of the concert and marching bands, the Leo club, SADD and TAT. Joshua Kovich is Editor-in-Chief of Wavelengths, plus plays French Horn and Upright Bass for the concert band, is in the marching band, the stage band, the drama and debate clubs, and is in Interact. Brianna Kuperavage is an active member of Youth Ministries, a four year letterer in soccer and softball, and a three year member of Student Government, where she is currently central Vice President.

After the students presentations President-Elect Bill Parulis gave a nice talk on Rotary for our guests and members.

Guests - David and JayneAnn Kovitch, Kim Kuperavage, Sandra Englert with the students and Mike Maley with Pottsville High.

Birthday’s - no birthdays

50/50 Winner - Terry Bixler, but he did not draw the correct card.

ROTARY BUSINESS

Kauffman’s Chicken Sale -Captain Adam Hench is chairing this event for the Club. The event will be Saturday, November 5, 11 am – 2 pm at Boyer’s on Market Street (old WayMart location). Sign-up sheets to help during the event are circulating at meetings.

Lottery with Port Carbon was a success – congratulations to Denise Ressler as the big winner! Denise was presented with her $1,000 in Giant gift cards at this week’s meeting.

New Raffle - Assistant District Governor Jim Cooksey told the club about a raffle currently being held by the district to benefit Foundation. Members can buy chances to win either a Rotary Wagon or a chair made of cherry wood with three different designs to choose from. Tickets are $5.00 and if a member purchases $25 or more worth of tickets, the money will count toward earning a Paul Harris. So if you give $100 annual, as many members donate on their birthdays, now would be a good time to do so. Jim needs to know by next week if anyone would like to participate.

Salvation Army Bell-ringing - The Club will again man a kettle for the Salvation Army this Christmas. The tentative date is December 10 outside of Boscov’s. The sign-up sheet will be started once the date is confirmed.
