PROGRAM – Amy Burkhart, Executive Director, PADCO
Amy’s presentation was on the recent Economic Summit in Pottsville, but she started by sharing some information on the Pottsville Area Development Corp. (PADCO). PADCO is the lead organization for economic development in downtown Pottsville. They administer the Enterprise Zone and loan project for the City. The loan project involves the availability of $2,000,000 in revolving loans to existing businesses and start-ups at a very competitive rate. PADCO also encompasses the Pottsville Business Association (PBA), the Parking Authority, The Technology Incubator, and the Sovereign Majestic Theater.
Every 5 years for the past 15 years, Pottsville has hosted an Economic Summit to reestablish and focus on specific goals within the City. The latest survey was released in July, 2011. Amy shared with the Club the results of the past three surveys, and pointed out some of the similarities and some of the changes, particularly over the past 5 years. Visitors to the City (tourists) and students were also interviewed this year for the first time, and Amy pointed out the differences in their opinions from area residents. Some of the results and initiatives from this survey include making Housing a top priority, especially finding quality rentals and apartments for professionals as well as dealing with blight; developing a Retail Incubator similar to the Technology Incubator already in existence; and to investigate the possibility of a downtown hotel/conference center.
We thank Amy for an informative presentation.
